Head of Research Unit – Embedded AI (f/m/d)

Your future responsibilities
We are looking for an experienced Head of Research Unit to lead and drive high quality, industry-relevant research into the miniaturisation of machine learning and signal processing algorithms and associated electronic sensor solutions.
Your Leadership responsibilities
  • Leading and developing the Embedded Artificial Intelligence research unit in the Intelligent Wireless Systems Division with currently 16 scientists focusing on machine learning, signal processing and neural network VLSI accelerators for a wide range of domains and applications. 
  • Vision for long-term research opportunities in electronic systems and miniaturization of machine learning and signal processing algorithms into hardware.
  • Shaping the division research program and project portfolio together with supervisors and peers.
  • Collaborate with the diverse team of experts to find optimal solutions.
  • Budget and ressource planning and control for the research unit. 
  • Overall, lead the research unit to generate high quality research outputs, scientific excellence and economic impact.
Your Scientific responsibilities
  • Close cooperation and support of academic and industrial project partners in collaborative research projects.  
  • Development of miniaturised electronic hardware systems and architectures.  
  • Acquisition, set-up and management of research projects with various industrial and academic partners, as well as proposals for national and international funding. 
  • Supervision of BSc, MSc, and PhD students.
  • Publication and presentation of the unit's research results in scientific journals, international conferences, international summits, scientific committees and relevant events.
Your profile
  • PhD in in Electrical Engineering, Microelectronics, Applied Physics, Computer Engineering or related fields with a specialisation in digital IC design for machine learning or signal processing applications. 
  • At least 8 years of practical experience in one or more of the above areas. 
  • Proven track record of at least 5 years of team leadership experience in industry or research.  
  • Leadership qualities, ability to inspire, develop and motivate young scientists and researchers to perform at their best. 
  • Scientific track record as evidenced by publications, invited lectures, etc. 
  • In-depth knowledge of the global market and the European industrial ecosystem and funding landscape. 
  • Active industrial and academic networks. 
  • Well organised and enjoys working in a dynamic and multicultural team. 
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills in English. German is an advantage.

This position is subject to the Collective Agreement for employees in non-university research (Research CA) in occupational group G (G1 salary = EUR 5.356, paid 14 times a year). Your actual salary will depend on your experience and qualifications. We offer a gross salary in the range of €85,000 to €120,000 per year (based on an all-in contract and bonus).
