PhD candidate / Project Assistant - Cooperation between Silicon Austria Labs Villach and University for Continuing Education in Krems (f/m/d)

Temporary, Part-time · VILLACH

Your future responsibilities
The advertised position is part of a cooperation between Silicon Austria Lab (SAL) in Villach and the University for Continuing Education in Krems (coordinated and supervised by Prof. Hubert Brückl)
Within the “Magnetic Encoder Systems” project, the design and application of magnetic pole wheels for, e.g., electromotors, wind turbines, etc is investigated. This includes the development of a Python-based pole wheel simulation environment, which aims at predicting and optimizing the magnetization process under varying wheel geometry, magnetic material properties, sensor properties, and system assembly influences. This allows a detailed study and analysis of influences on the wheel’s magnetic stray field and the writing process. The position is involved in the construction of a high precision pole wheel experiment, which allows the experimental validation and verification of the simulation results. The tasks are mainly carried out at our cooperation partner SAL in Villach.

We are looking for a PhD candidate interested in such a topic between simulation and experiment.

Your tasks include:

  • Independent research and research assistance in the “Magnetic Encoder Systems” project
  • Publishing research findings in international, peer-reviewed scientific journals
  • Engaging in international research collaboration
  • Pursuing and submitting a (cumulative) PhD thesis within three years

Your profile
  • University Master’s degree in the fields of physics or equivalent technical study
  • Knowledge in Magnetism (e.g., lecture courses, work experience)
  • Interest in both experiment and simulation
  • Good English language skills (min. B2 level)
In addition, the following criteria are desirable:
  • Previous work experience in academic research
  • Programming skills, e.g., in Python
  • Computational magnetism
