CRYSTALLINE PhD position - THz Communication and Sensing Research (all genders) // Job-ID: 144-1

Temporary, Full-time · LINZ

Your future responsibilities
The PhD topic focuses on developing and investigating joint communication and sensing tasks in TeraHertz (THz) frequency band beyond current communication standards.

Optical synthesis and detection of THz waves based on the photo-mixing of tunable continuous wave lasers is well-established in measurement technology, in particular, for high-resolution spectroscopy. However, photonic THz technologies are also promising for demonstrating next generation communication setups in the THz spectral range.

In this project a setup based on photonic THz technology using components at the optical telecom wavelength is to be developed into a flexible joint communication and sensing test setup that allows to investigate communication, localization (RADAR) and sensing tasks.

You would work in a team with close ties to international academic partners and national industry, and you would be responsible for the following tasks:
  • Develop machine learning or deep learning-based algorithms to analyze arbitrary data, such as image, audio, or radar data.
  • Design experiments to thoroughly evaluate and compare the performance of several algorithms, including the identification of potential weaknesses.
  • Publication of the results at peer reviewed international conferences and scientific journals.
  • Execution and management of industry projects in collaboration with other team members

Your profile
Are you looking forward to working in an international team environment at the forefront of future communication systems? Do you have the following skills, educational background and/or professional experience (the more the better)?
  • M.Sc. (or higher) in communication engineering, physics, electronics engineering, signal processing,
  • Previous experience with practical implementation of communication or optical measurement setups (e.g. physical layer RF / fiber optical communication, laser spectroscopy, etc.)
  • Experience in one or more of the following fields is a plus:
    • TeraHertz Sensing
    • Machine Learning
    • Communication Theory
  • Hands-on, scientifically curious, communicative and well-organized.
  • Fluent oral and written communication skills in English.
